UPS Battery Usage & Maintenance Guide – GEM GS & GM Series for Reliable Backup Power

UPS Battery Usage & Maintenance Guide – GEM GS & GM Series for Reliable Backup Power

2026-09-01

A UPS system’s long‑term reliability depends not only on the equipment itself, but also on proper installation, environmental control, and regular maintenance. Based on years of field experience, GEM Battery presents this practical guide to help you extend battery life, reduce failure risks, and keep your critical loads protected.

Environmental Requirements for UPS Installation

Stable Placement & Adequate Ventilation

The UPS must be placed on a firm, level surface. Maintain sufficient clearance on all sides to ensure proper airflow and heat dissipation. Keep the unit away from heat sources and direct sunlight. The room should be kept clean, with temperature and humidity within recommended ranges, and protected from corrosive gases and dust.

Load Capacity Planning

Avoid long‑term overload operation. To extend the service life of both the UPS and its batteries, follow these load guidelines:

- For backup UPS: load should be 60%–70% of rated power

- For online UPS: load should be 70%–80% of rated power

Keeping a reasonable margin reduces heat generation and improves overall system stability.

Lightning & Surge Protection

Lightning strikes are a major threat to sensitive microelectronic devices. UPS systems contain CMOS ICs and control CPUs that are highly vulnerable to electromagnetic pulses. Even if your UPS has built‑in surge protection, you must ensure effective shielding and a solid protective earth ground. Additional surge suppressors on both power input and communication lines are strongly recommended to create a multi‑layer defense.

Essential Maintenance and Operation Practices

Output Load Type

Never connect inductive loads (e.g., motors, drills) directly to the UPS output. Always follow the wiring instructions in the user manual – ensure correct phase, neutral, and ground connections. Do not alter the wiring sequence arbitrarily.

Correct Start/Shutdown Sequence

Always follow the proper power‑on and power‑off sequence to avoid sudden load changes that can cause voltage fluctuations. Also, never cycle the UPS on and off rapidly. After turning off the UPS, wait at least 6 seconds before restarting; otherwise, the unit may enter a “startup failure” state, where neither mains nor inverter output is available.

Battery Charge and Discharge Management

All UPS systems have low‑voltage protection, but once the battery has discharged to the protection cut‑off point, the voltage will rebound slightly. Do not restart the UPS at this moment – this would cause deep over‑discharge and permanent capacity loss. The battery must be recharged fully before normal use. For a brand‑new UPS or one that has been stored for a long time, charge it first before connecting loads; otherwise, backup time cannot be guaranteed.

Periodic Activation (Refresh Charge)

If your UPS runs in a stable power environment without frequent outages, it is recommended to perform a controlled discharge and recharge cycle every 3 to 6 months. This activates the active material inside the battery and significantly extends service life. Neglecting this may lead to sulfation and even damage to the UPS host.

Routine Inspection and Cleaning

Regular maintenance should include:

Removing dust from inside the unit

Measuring individual battery voltages

Checking fan operation

Verifying and adjusting system parameters

A well‑planned maintenance schedule helps detect issues early and prevents unexpected failures.
